“Efforts and courage are not enough without purpose and direction” -John F. Kennedy

My name is Damu Rufaro Winston. It means “one who brings happiness to his people”. Over the years, I have learned a person’s name is so much more than just an identifier. Most parent(s) spend countless hours deciding, fighting, and praying over the name of their soon to be sons and daughters. So, even before the child is born, he or she has begun an internal journey to learn what it means to become that name. It’s no coincidence we ask ourselves, “Who am I?”, “Who am I supposed to be?”, “What's my purpose?”…

I truly believe that when your name has meaning, you go through life learning how to fulfill the meaning of that name.

Nearly 15 years ago, I began my career as an automation engineer with IBM. Starting my career as an automation software engineer, building a software patent for one of the largest software companies in the world, I thought then that I knew exactly what I was destined to be. Since then, earning a Global MBA at Hult International Business School, becoming an international selling Author, and having worked and lived in multiple countries, such as the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, The USA, The Gambia, and Senegal, I’ve come to learn I choose purpose over work.

Through work, I have had the opportunities to build products and national strategy within the Venture Capitalism, Healthcare, Financial Services, Technology, and even Nuclear Energy sectors. I am a global technology leader, who has led distributed teams across 4 continents. I have delivered business solutions that have resulted in a projected ROI of $.5 Billion USD. My strengths include public speaking, coaching diverse talent, planning/forecasting, managing expectations horizontally and vertically, business process re-engineering, and project delivery. My work has provided me with a set of proven and seasoned talents, financial fulfillment and relationship capital specifically within the technology and innovation domains. However, to date, my greatest fulfillment has been found in aligning my efforts to empower others.

For as long as I can remember, empowering those whom I serve meant striving for legendary.

As a child, my mother moved my sister and I from Baltimore, Maryland in the United States to The Gambia in West Africa. It is amazing how one experience, like completely uprooting your entire family and moving half way around the world, can change one's life forever.

While this move to another continent would be hard for anyone, let alone a child, the experience that I gained ingrained in me, at an early age, an appreciation for diverse perspectives and culture. #ExposureYieldsGrowth It is these diverse experiences that have historically enabled me to see opportunity in the midst of the most challenging predicaments and to be a visionary.

As a result, I credit much of my success in life, both personally and professionally, to my mother's dedication for excellence, passion for living her truth and selfless support for her children.

Subsequently, my goal in life is to leave my family with a better legacy than the one I was blessed with. That legacy, I pray, includes supporting my family (and those whom I collaborate with), with financial capital, and time capital, all while making a positive impact on our home planet.

And since I believe quality is never an accident; it is always intentional. I'm building a quality legacy.

I know my purpose and always striving for legendary is the path I'm following.

Let's collaborate and make something quality together.
